(T/N: SORRY FOR THE LATE UPDATE!! so a summary for y'all who skipped the last chapter - basically she goes to find the pervert Shi Gui, who turns out to be a serial killer with an obsession with girls. she kills and refines him generates more bugs, and then rescues a girl!! Yay~! Also I'm helping clarify some stuff, so it won't be exactly the same.)
In a small cellar, more than a dozen corpses were laid one after another, and every night, Shi Gui would sleep among these corpses. He really was a cruel, vile pervert.
Lin Dan shook her head, filled with disgust, and stamped her feet to stop the insects from devouring the corpses. She fumbled around in the cellar for a while, and finally found a switch, turning on a small light bulb hanging on the cellar ceiling. The dim light illuminated this cramped space, and the thin girl who had been screaming slowly calmed down.
Lin Dan kept flashing the light, so the girl couldn't see her face clearly. She thought it was Shi Gui who had come, which was why she had been shouting.
"You, who are you? Were you captured too?" The girl's voice was very dry, and in her eyes, as she looked at Lin Dan, was sympathy and desolation. She had completely given up hope of escaping.
"My name is Lin Dan. And who are you?" Lin Dan walked to the girl and touched the iron chain on her ankle. Now she could easily break the chain with her bare hands, but she didn't. A unique person would always be rejected by others, so she could not expose her uniqueness until she had absolutely powerful power.
"My name is..." The girl thought hard for a while before slowly saying, "My name is Yu Yeying." This name that originally belonged to her seemed so distant from her now. Here, she was just an animal used to satisfy someone's desires. Shi Gui didn't care what her name was or where she came from, and she slowly wasted away, losing her identity bit by bit.
Lin Dan nodded and asked, "How long have you been locked up here?"
The girl's face was numb. "I don't know."
Then in what year were you locked up here?"
"2015."
"It's 2018 now," Lin Dan told the girl the exact time, "You've been here for three years."
The girl nodded slowly, her eyes full of confusion. Time was meaningless to her. She had lost her present, so where was her future? (T/N: her present time, not Christmas gift btw)
Lin Dan tied her dry and messy hair, then discreetly checked her pulse. Yeying was not only malnourished but also suffering from organ failure and various diseases. If Lin Dan hadn't come, she would have died in this dark place within a year, if not sooner.
Lin Dan sighed silently, then stood up and climbed out of the cellar along the steps. The densely packed poisonous insects followed her out like a receding tide.
The girl watched this eerie scene in silence, showing no surprise or fear, and didn't ask for help from Lin Dan. After being imprisoned for so long, her mind had become dull. At first, she had thought day and night about escaping this hellish place, but now she didn't dare to think at all, just enduring day by day.
She looked at the dozens of corpses unearthed by the insects, and thought desperately, "If I could have died earlier and become an unfeeling corpse, it might have been a good thing."
The shocking secret was hidden in the cellar, and the key to the iron chain must've been carried by Shi Gui in case he lost it. With this in mind, Lin Dan crawled out from under the bed and groped around Shi Gui's corpse, and sure enough, she found a key. His skin was full of insects, and once they were sated with blood and flesh, they began to devour their own kind, causing the thin layer of skin to continuously tremble. It was a horrifying scene. (T/N: No sht sherlock).
Lin Dan didn't even frown. Instead, she walked outside and found that the medicinal herbs in the copper stove were almost burned out. She bit her fingertip and let her blood drop into it. Suddenly, a half-foot-high flame burst from the copper furnace, followed by a surprisingly fragrant green smoke, attracting all the densely packed poisonous insects, which crawled over like a tidal wave.
They scrambled to enter the copper furnace one after another, and the small furnace cauldron, with a capacity of only half a liter, was able to absorb poisonous insects continuously, as if never satisfied. The tide of insects disappeared in an instant, and immediately, a teeth-grinding sound came from the copper stove.
Lin Dan listened carefully; it was not difficult to imagine the various types of insects engaged in a fierce battle inside. After all, only the one that survived would have the right to be called Gu.
The enigmatic man had been silently observing Lin Dan's every move. He became more and more impressed by and interested in this little girl. She was courageous and kept her composure, a sign of promising talent.
"The inheritance of a Gu Master comes from the bloodline," he explained, unusually in a rare good mood. "The purer your bloodline, the more powerful the Gu insect you cultivate. Of course, the method of cultivation also determines the strength of the Gu; this, you'll have to figure it out on your own."
Lin Dan didn't ask if her own bloodline was pure. At this point, even if she was weak, she would do everything to become stronger. Bloodlines couldn't be changed, but her will could determine her destiny. She had always believed in that.
The green smoke from the copper furnace slowly dissipated, and the gnawing sound ceased entirely. Lin Dan then opened the top and took out a blood-red Gu.
The man's eyebrows raised slightly, as if surprised, but he didn't speak. To cultivate a blood worm on her first attempt - indeed, what a remarkable talent.
Lin Dan didn't spend too much time studying the small bug but swallowed it directly. The intense feeling of hunger instantly disappeared, and she heaved a sigh of relief. If the energy contained in an adult Gu insect was greater than that of a Gu egg, what could be better food than an adult Gu insect?
Lin Dan naturally thought of the Gu King and became more determined to learn the art of Gu cultivation. Without studying Gu art properly, she would never be able to cultivate a Gu King, let alone satisfy the Holy Gu within her.
The man leaned down and looked at her, sighing, "Will you really eat such disgusting things?"
Lin Dan turned a deaf ear, continuing to pour the ashes from the copper furnace, wiping it clean with a handkerchief, and placing it in her bag. She searched Shi Gui's house, took his phone and cash, and cleared all traces of her presence one by one before returning to the cellar and unlocking the iron chain on the girl's ankle, ordering her, "You follow me."
The girl looked at Lin Dan blankly, her face full of confusion. It was only when Lin Dan loudly dropped the iron chain that had bound her for more than a thousand days and nights on the ground that the girl suddenly came back to her senses and, in disbelief, whispered, "You want to take me out?"
"Yes," Lin Dan nodded, her tone resolute.
The girl tightly grasped Lin Dan's wrist, her expression horrified, "No, that person's upstairs! If he finds out, he'll capture you too!" Her will and survival instinct had long been eroded by endless torment.
"He won't be coming back," Lin Dan reassured her, gently stroking her head, her voice tender. "Don't be afraid; you're free now."
The girl kept shaking her head, tears falling. She knew how much longed for freedom, but she was afraid - afraid that it was just a dream, afraid that when she woke up, she would be trapped in darkness once again, enduring endless pain and despair. (T/N: Poor girl T^T)
Lin Dan didn't know how to soothe the girl's inner trauma, so she simply lifted her off the ground and onto her feet. When the girl saw Shi Gui's withered corpse, she immediately screamed. After Lin Dan covered her mouth, the girl slowly realized that the devil who had tormented her day and night was truly dead, never to return.
The girl started to sob silently, her eyes filled with a mix of hatred, joy, and relief. A scene that seemed terrifying to the ordinary was equivalent to redemption in her eyes. From now on, she didn't have to worry about this man suddenly reappearing in her life, dragging her back into the abyss. She had no interest in knowing how he died or whether she had any connection to it. She was saved; she was finally rescued!
Lin Dan held the girl by the bedside, ensuring she could see Shi Gui's lifeless form. Avoiding the trauma wouldn't heal her; only accepting it could. Accepting the hardships, accepting reality, and accepting the her that was riddled with scars. If it had been Lin Dan imprisoned instead, she believed that in the moment of her escape, she too would willingly watch Shi Gui descend into hell.
The girl's sobs grew smaller and smaller until they stopped completely. She gently tugged on Lin Dan's sleeve and said hoarsely, "I'm ready. Let's go."
Lin Dan hugged her gently and escaped into the night.
---
The next day, the feeling of hunger returned, making Lin Dan very uncomfortable. She was about to get out of bed to find something to eat when she noticed a small, emaciated body curled up at her feet.
Yu Yeying had expected to be sleepless, just like every other night in the past. However, nestled at the feet of the person who had saved her, she had actually slept soundly, sweetly, and peacefully. The moment the other person woke up, she did too, quickly sitting up and opening her eyes wide. When she returned last night, this person had already bathed and changed her clothes, and every action had been so gentle, making her nostalgic.
Lin Dan put on her coat and held the girl's wrist to check her pulse. This body would definitely not survive much longer without treatment. Due to malnutrition, her organs were damaged, her bones were broken in multiple places, and she had suffered several miscarriages, leaving her with lasting health issues. Shi Gui had vented his beastly desires on her and beat her like a sandbag when he didn't get what he wanted. It was a miracle that she could survive until now. (T/N: dirt should've suffered more)
The girl obediently let Lin Dan check her, even trying to force a smile. She hadn't smiled in three years, and she had forgotten how to control the muscles on her face.
Lin Dan gently said, "Do you still remember your parents' phone numbers? I can call them to come and get you."
The girl's already distorted expression suddenly froze. Home, what a warm word. In the beginning, she had dreamed of returning home every day. But later, after enduring such terrible treatment, home had become a place she could never go back to. Her longing had turned into fear and embarrassment.
Would her parents accept her as she was now? How would she reintegrate into life? She covered her face and let out a desperate cry.
Lin Dan patted her head repeatedly and persuaded, "Your parents are definitely still looking for you. Give them a call first."
The girl cried for a long time before nodding hesitantly.
Lin Dan took out Shi Gui's phone but struggled for a long time without opening the page. She suddenly felt discouraged. She looked at the girl, who also shook her head, indicating that she was helpless, too. So, the two of them had no choice but to go to the neighboring room and ask Zhou Nan for help. He fiddled with his phone all day, so he should know what to do, right?
Could you please leave your comments at the end of the chapter? It breaks immersion when reading the story. To paint a picture it would be equivalent to someone yelling while you’re trying to watch a film. Thank you!
